How can small businesses reduce their plastic waste?

The devastating impact of plastic waste on our oceans has become a regular topic on local, national and international news channels. Beaches around the world are strewn with litter, marine wildlife suffer from digesting plastic they mistake for food and patches of plastic debris the size of Texas drift across the globe.

The Earth Day Network report that around 8 million tons of plastic are thrown into the ocean annually and, by 2050, there will be more plastic in the oceans than there are fish.

HOW WE'VE MADE CHANGES

As part of RPM’s environmental commitment, we are always looking for new ways to reduce our impact on the environment.

We already recycle all of our waste paper and card, we have significantly reduced the amount of waste we send to landfill and now produce less general waste than the average household.

But we want to encourage our customers to do the same.

That’s why we’ve introduced paper and card replacements for the plastic we use.

One example is our business card holders.

We produce thousands of business cards for local business people every year and have always sent them out in very professional looking plastic containers which are reusable but not recyclable – and we’re worried that they end up in the bin.

Instead, we are now using card boxes for our business cards which are both reusable and recyclable. We’re also delighted to say that because these card boxes are delivered to us flat-pack our carbon output from delivery is also reduced.

WHY YOU SHOULD TOO...

In Dorset, not only do we benefit from living in a rich natural environment which includes some of the most beautiful and diverse beaches, coastlines and heathlands in the world, we also rely on the hospitality and tourism that they bring which underpins our local economy.

It’s important that other small businesses in Dorset take steps to find recyclable alternatives to the plastic they, and their customers, use.

We’d love to hear your ideas!
